Feb. 3 staff meeting recap

At the first staff meeting of 2023, President Marc Conner updated the Skidmore community on important initiatives and events, three cabinet-level searches, and a brighter than anticipated fiscal outlook. Skidmore staff also participated in conversations about Skidmore’s Visions and Values project.

Dining Services

Chocolate-covered strawberries for Valentine’s Day

Dining Services is selling chocolate-covered strawberries and cupcakes for Valentine's Day. Orders must by placed online by Friday, Feb. 10, and can be picked up in The Spa from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP) presents ‘Reclaim Your Brain’

Presented by an EAP counselor, the “Reclaim Your Brain” session from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, Feb. 2, on the second floor of Murray-Aikins Dining Hall is designed for individuals to focus on their brain health. Learn more and register online.

This virtual workshop from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22, explores how microbehaviors can lead to a climate of mistrust and exclusion that negatively impacts performance. Register online.

Announcements

Gathering for victims of earthquake in Turkey and Syria

The International Student Union (ISU) invites the Skidmore community to a gathering at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 11, at Wyckoff Center. The event will include time to voice grief and support for those impacted by this tragedy in Turkey, Syria, and the region. It will also be an opportunity to learn about relief efforts already underway and organizations needing donations and support. Contact ISU or the Office of Religious and Spiritual Life for more information.

 

Wyckoff Center presents Lovefest

Please visit Wyckoff Center for a Valentine’s Day open house from noon to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14. At noon, bring your own lunch to a screening of video clips and discussion. From 1 to 5 p.m., there will be stations with arts and crafts, emotional support animals, seated massage, reiki, a sound bath, and more. Sweet treats and snacks will be provided. We are guided by bell hooks’ wisdom from her book “All About Love: New Visions”: “To truly love we must learn to mix various ingredients — care, affection, recognition, respect, commitment, and trust, as well as honest and open communication.”

 

Valentine's Day flower grams from Skidmore field hockey team

Send a carnation and a candy to make somebody smile this Valentine's Day! Each gram is only $3 and can be picked up in Case Center between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 14. Contact Gillian Maher for more information.

Student Leadership Award nominations sought

The Skidmore community is invited to nominate students who have made outstanding contributions to the community through their involvement, service, and leadership development activities for several Student Leadership Awards. Join Skidmore's Her Campus club, an online magazine for female college students, where you can pursue your passion for writing. Ensemble Connect returns to Skidmore

Ensemble Connect is celebrating its 16th year at Skidmore. A spring 2023 Skidmore residency will take place Feb. 14-18. It will feature lessons and coaching with music students, class visits, and community outreach, and it will culminate in a performance in Arthur Zankel Music Center at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17. Tickets are $5 for Skidmore students, faculty, and staff; to purchase, visit the Zankel website.

 

Asana through Art: Yoga at the Tang

The Tang invites the Skidmore community to a series of art-inspired yoga sessions. Asana through Art: Yoga at the Tang are free, beginner-friendly yoga classes open to faculty, students, and staff at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7, and Tuesday, April 11. COVID-19 Reminders

Community members are encouraged to review a Jan. 25 email that includes current COVID-19 guidance and information. As a reminder, students may continue to pick up free rapid tests at Case Information Desk or at Campus Safety. Employees are reminded that additional free rapid tests are available through www.covid.gov/tests, and that MVP covers the costs of rapid tests. Students and employees must notify the College if they test positive for COVID-19. Updates continue to be posted to Skidmore’s Campus Planning website and Skidmore’s COVID-19 Dashboard.

StartUp Skidmore

StartUp Skidmore, a student workshop celebrating entrepreneurship, will take place Feb. 17-19. Helena Yohannes ’04, co-founder of 2.4.1 Cosmetics, will provide a keynote address at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17, in Gannett Auditorium that is open to the campus community. Register for the workshop by this Friday, Feb. 10, on the StartUp Skidmore website.

 

Camp Northwoods registration opens Feb. 9

Online registration for Camp Northwoods, Skidmore’s summer day camp for children, will open for employees at 9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9. Skidmore community members receive priority in the registration process and should watch their email for specific instructions the morning of Feb. 9. Jazz artist Takuya Kuroda kicks off new Zankel season

From adventurous soul-jazz to indie-rock, to time-honored classical and its contemporary interpretations, Zankel Music Center is set to deliver a series of exciting musical experiences this spring. The season kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, with jazz trumpeter Takuya Kuroda and his band. Tickets are $5 for Skidmore community members.

 

Peer Health Educators present: Celebrate your relationships

Peer Health Educators invite you to join them in celebrating your relationships this Valentine's month. Drop by The Spa from 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, and be a part of various activities centered on healthy relationships with your body, your wellness, and your emotions.

 

Ash Wednesday observances at Skidmore

Drop-in hours for Ash Wednesday on Feb. 22 will be held from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Case Center, second floor. An ecumenical service will be held at 6 p.m. in Wilson Chapel. Summer Student Housing

Summer Housing Application opens April 1 and closes on May 5. Summer housing is available to students participating in summer classes, summer collaborative research, internships, or independent study, or on-campus employment.

 

American Sign Language Workshops at the Tang

In conjunction with the upcoming exhibition “Christine Sun Kim: Oh Me Oh My,” the Tang is offering introductory workshops on deaf history and culture, American Sign Language, and basic ASL vocabulary and grammar taught by certified ASL instructor Colette Steves. Registration is required. Classes are at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 27, March 20, and April 17. Contact Olivia Cammisa-Frost for more information.

 

IMPACT National Conference

Skidmore’s Office of Civic Engagement, Career Development Center, and Benef-Action are co-sponsoring eight students who wish to attend the IMPACT Conference, focused on civic engagement of college students in community service, advocacy, and other forms of social action, Feb. 23-25 at UMass Amherst. SWOP Lunch and Workshop

Join Sustainability Office staff from noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 1, on the second floor of Murray-Aikins Dining Hall, rooms 1 and 2, for a catered lunch and workplace sustainability workshop to discuss the Sustainable Workplace Operations Program (SWOP). Athletics News

The Skidmore College men’s and women’s basketball teams will have the playoffs in mind with home games this weekend against Bard and Vassar. The women (16-5 overall, 12-2 Liberty League) have already clinched a home playoff contest with four games to play. The team will look to secure a first-round bye with games against Bard at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and Vassar at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The men (10-11, 8-6) are looking to clinch a playoff berth against Bard at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Vassar at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Learn more on the Skidmore Athletics website.
