Skidmore advances civic preparedness, democratic engagement

Skidmore is joining the College Presidents for Civic Preparedness, a new initiative convened by The Institute for Citizens & Scholars to facilitate shared learning and greater impact through partnership toward the goal of developing college students for democratic engagement as empowered citizens.

Announcements

Wyckoff Center presents Lovefest

‌Please visit Wyckoff Center from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 14, for reiki, a sound bath, chair massages, emotional support animals, arts and crafts, and more. We are guided by bell hooks’ wisdom from her book “All About Love: New Visions”: “To truly love we must learn to mix various ingredients — care, affection, recognition, respect, commitment, and trust, as well as honest and open communication.” Lovefest is presented by the Office of Institutional Diversity.

‌COVID-19 updates

‌The COVID-19 Logistics Working Group reminds the campus community that COVID-19 affects individuals in different ways, and that Skidmore remains a mask-supportive and mask-friendly community. Mask wearing is also recommended while traveling, in high-density settings where a large group is gathered for an extended period, or in other places where transmission may be more likely. If you are sick or have been exposed to COVID-19, please mask up and test. ‌Students should review these guidelines for self-reporting and isolation. Employees must inform their supervisor or department chair, email Human Resources, and follow CDC guidelines. Employees are also encouraged to review Skidmore’s policies about absences, including caring for dependents who may be ill.

‌President’s office hours ‌ ‌ ‌

‌President Conner will hold office hours from 3 to 4 p.m. Thursday, April 4. All faculty, staff, and students are invited to request a 10-minute, in-person appointment. To register, please email presoff@istanbulbuklet.com. Requests will be handled in the order that they are received.

‌Career Connections: Class of '24 Virtual Career Fair ‌

‌Class of 2024 students are invited to connect with employers and alumni from a variety of industries during the Career Development Center’s senior exclusive career fair, held virtually from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 16, through the Brazen platform. ‌Exploremore: Majors and Minors

‌Exploremore: Majors and Minors is devoted to helping first-year students and sophomores explore potential majors/minors and other areas of academic interest. This year’s event will run Monday, Feb. 19 through Friday, March 1.

‌Summer Experience Fund Award applications ‌

‌Applications for the Summer Experience Fund and Post Grad Awards are due April 11. Stipends of $4,500 are awarded to support students completing internships, research assignments, community service projects, artist residencies, apprenticeships, and more. SEE-Beyond Award application for summer ‌ ‌

‌Applications for SEE-Beyond Awards are due March 21. Awardees receive $6,000 to support a variety of academic endeavors, such as laboratory research, internships, and artistic residencies, over the summer. For more information, email oaascholar@istanbulbuklet.com.

‌2024 Summer Pre-College application

‌Did you know Skidmore's Pre-College program is one of the top 10 in the country? Returning to in-person learning this year, high school juniors and seniors are invited to live on campus, take Skidmore classes, and earn college credit. Classes run July 1 to Aug. 3.

‌Consortium on High Achievement and Success 2024 Student of Color Conference

‌Interested students are encouraged to apply to attend this year's conference, "Renaissance: In the Wake of (Re)imaginings, Movements, and Joy," which aims to celebrate movements, creativity, and resilience, April 5 through April 7.

‌Challahmore baking event and sale

‌Challahmore will be selling challah from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23. Fill out an order form by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22. Proceeds benefit the Wilton Food Pantry and SNACpack.

‌Make Your Voice Heard Skidmore Public Policy Prize competition ‌

‌Applications for the 2024 Make Your Voice Heard Skidmore Public Policy Prize competition are due at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 12.

‌Kids Night Out

‌Kids ages 5 to 13 are invited to come enjoy well-supervised recreational activities provided by the great facilities of Skidmore College’s Williamson Sports Center 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16. No pre-registration is necessary. Cost is $10 per child. For more information, email Ron Plourde.

‌Skidmore Shop textbook buyback returns

‌From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today, Feb. 14, and tomorrow, Feb. 15, the Skid Shop will be hosting a textbook buyback. Can’t make it this time around? Another buyback event will be hosted at the end of the semester.

‌Skidmore Weekly Bulletin submission procedure and schedule

‌Please help reduce bulk emails by posting your announcement in Skidmore Weekly Bulletin, which is distributed to all students and employees. Submit announcements and events, academic lectures, and faculty-staff achievements by completing the appropriate online form. The deadline for all submissions is noon on Monday. Athletics News

The Skidmore men’s ice hockey team will host a home playoff game for the first time since 2012 at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17, when the third-seed Thoroughbreds host sixth-seed UMass Boston. Tickets to the New England Hockey Conference quarterfinal are priced at $5 general admission, $3 for students, and free for children under 5 years old. Free tickets are available to the first 100 students at the door, courtesy of Student Affairs. There will be a free fan bus leaving Case Center at 6:30 p.m. and returning immediately after the game. The 13th ranked Thoroughbreds take a 17-6-2 record into the game, including 7-3 and 4-0 wins over UMass Boston (9-14-2). For more information, visit the Skidmore Athletics website.
